Starting the 2024 Netherlands Trip in Den Bosch, we get over jet lag while exploring the centre on foot, some infrastructure highlights further out, ride to neighbouring Tilburg, and see a few innovative things I haven’t seen before along the way… There continues to be more lessons from the Dutch…

Dutch designs, even Dutch levels of ridership during the BC Land Summit bike tour… Catching up on Metral Drive after a year or two, as we take a bike ride through Nanaimo on the new Evo bike share bikes, taking in some multi-use pathways, protected bike lanes, protected intersections and continuous sidewalks and bike paths.

With a few hours to kill around Downtown Vancouver, I took a spin around on the bike, where I thought I’d try and find some classic waterfront views. Not my typical post, but sometimes it’s nice just to enjoy the view… There’s still some good traffic free bike infrastructure though…

The final chapter of fietspad not only summed up the findings of that trip, it was the starting point to explore other Dutch ideas, beyond the protected bike lanes, protected intersections and continuous sidewalks that are already gaining traction.

If cargo bike moms and dads are the indicator species of bicycle network safety and connectivity… then Victoria is pretty safe and connected... On this whistle stop tour of some of the city’s bike infrastructure, they were everywhere.

From red bike lanes, continuous sidewalks and nearside signals in Canmore, to pedestrian bridges and a new woonerf in Banff. These mountain towns are showing that a bit of snow and winter conditions is no excuse not to do good things with your streets…

Well, sort of… this blog post is less about super wide bike lanes, and more super wide photographs of them. But like usual, there are lots of bike lanes, and some other interesting things along the way…

Copenhagen style bike lanes, landscaped bike lanes, pedestrian streets, no right-turns-on-red, and an innovative bicycle street amongst other things…

Canals… Protected bike lanes… ok, it still has a ways to go, but spending a week in Ottawa, and for the first time, having my bike with me, I was able to explore a lot more than many previous trips, and there’s a lot of good things happening. Here’s what I came across…

Imagine a traffic signal that is aware you’re arriving on a bike and decides to adjust its timing to give you a green light without needing to stop. It doesn’t happen every time, but when it does, it’s quite special!

It might seem like nit picking, but what we call a street for bicycles is important, even more so if we can reflect that name in the signage and pavement markings, and maybe even convey the priorities a little better than a simple sharrow.

We’re talking Nice, the City in France here, but the infrastructure could also be described as nice. Take a wander and occasional bike ride along some of the protected bicycle infrastructure.
