In past years on our Dutch trips, we’ve set out on a bit of a mission to see how far the bike network extends… And turns out it extended everywhere we went… This year would be a bit slower paced, enjoying a few cities and their surroundings within South Holland… There was no focus other than to once again enjoy the Netherlands, but there’s always things to see along the way that are worth sharing…

Three names that don’t always go together, but I had a quick trip to Calgary to present Lessons from the Dutch at the Southern Alberta ITE Luncheon, and as always, I took the opportunity to learn a little by checking out the infrastructure while there. I make a quick stop to see what’s new in Canmore, take in a few routes around Calgary, and a quick check-in on our Guildford Way project in Coquitlam…

We had a few warm days last week, but things got in the way of riding my bike. So with temperatures of 18 degree in the forecast, the shorts were on for a ride through north Burnaby, North Vancouver and back via Vancouver, taking in some old projects and relevant bits of infrastructure along the way… It never got close to 18 degrees…

With a bit of spare time to kill in and around Victoria, I spent some time in the City, along the regional trails, and checking in on early construction work for our ISL project at Uptown in Saanich that will support RapidBus and active transportation…

With a flight home out of Amsterdam, it would have been rude not to spend the last couple of days in the Netherlands, and after a few weeks in cities that still have a way to go in terms of bicycle infrastructure, it was so good to once again enjoy the ease of getting around the Netherlands by bicycle…

You could say it was mostly just jeans, a nice coat, and maybe a scarf and hat… But it was a symbol that riding a bicycle was clearly just a normal part of daily life, and not something you had to dress differently for… This could be culture, or it could be enabled by the streets and bicycle infrastructure design…

Just a short bus ride from Croatia, Budapest seemed like a place to tick off the list. It blew us away with it’s buildings, had some decent bike infrastructure, but the transit system left a sour taste as we left the City…
