Bad Weather and Bicycle Streets

Just as we thought the winter was over, a final blast of snow snuck in… We all know that the “nobody bikes in the rain or snow” argument is a myth, but it never hurts to show that once in a while… So with snow in the forecast and a need to be downtown, I took the camera out hoping for some epic people riding bikes in the snow shots…

Even though it was dry when I left the house, by the time I’d made it down to our (ISL’s) Frances-Union Bicycle Street project in North Burnaby. The snow had started, so at least I’d get one shot in the snow… But later that day, by the time I made it downtown-ish… There was nothing but rain… Still, it was cold, and gloves are helpful…

Did you spot the nice little vegetable garden planter in the foreground there? It’s not always easy to capture the rain, but it was pretty heavy here… It’s harder to bike with umbrellas when you have to change gear and brake with your hands… I think biking with umbrellas in the Netherlands is much easier when you have a single speed and backpedal brakes… Scramble crossing…

Rain capes… I’d normally be grateful that the rain had subsided on my way home, but was hoping for worse…

Still, despite the forecast, plenty of people were getting around by bike, even with the kids…

We need more colourful buildings in Vancouver…

They make an otherwise dull frontage interesting and add a bit of vibrancy to the street…

Not just bikes… People getting around by shared scooter…

As I made my way back on Adanac…

I wasn't the only one…

Deliveries still being made…

And even back up at SFU, where it had been snowing, at least one person was getting around by scooter in the slush… When it’s often dull and grey up on Burnaby Mountain, some less grey buildings would provide a nicer vibe…

Not quite the shots I was hoping for, but it doesn’t always work out…
